Altcoins Outpace Bitcoin as Market Activity Remains Thin
A broad basket of altcoins gained about 3% over 24 hours, while bitcoin remained below $83,500 and spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $681 million in weekly outflows.

Altcoins moved higher over the past 24 hours even as bitcoin remained below $83,500, giving the wider crypto market a stronger showing than its largest asset. The move came during thin trading, a condition that can make short-term gains appear more pronounced than they might be during heavier market activity.
Broader crypto basket leads
The CoinDesk 80, an index tracking a wider group of crypto assets, rose around 3% in 24 hours. That was more than twice the gain recorded by the CoinDesk 5, a narrower index focused on the market’s largest assets. The gap suggests that the recent advance was more concentrated among altcoins than among the biggest cryptocurrencies.
For market participants, the relative performance offers a snapshot of where buying interest was strongest during the period measured. It does not, on its own, establish whether the move represents a lasting shift in market leadership. Thin trading can also leave individual assets and broader baskets more sensitive to changes in demand.
ETF flows remain a counterpoint
Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds lost $681 million last week, adding a separate signal to the market picture. While altcoins posted gains over the latest 24-hour period, the weekly ETF figure points to net withdrawals from spot bitcoin investment products across the previous week.
Bitcoin’s position below $83,500 and the ETF outflows provide important context for the altcoin advance. The market was therefore showing a split pattern: broader crypto assets were rising in the short term, while bitcoin remained below that level and investment products tied to it recorded losses over the week.
With only a limited amount of trading activity behind the latest move, the performance gap between the two indices is best read as a current market snapshot rather than a forecast. Further data would be needed to determine whether altcoins can maintain their lead or whether trading interest returns to the largest assets.
