Bitcoin weakened as uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next policy move added to broader market pressure. The move came alongside a sharp sell-off in South Korean equities, with the Kospi index plunging 8%, highlighting how quickly changing interest-rate expectations can affect both digital assets and traditional markets.
Rate-hike expectations shifted after inflation data
Market bets on an October Fed rate hike briefly rose to nearly 50% after Wednesday’s inflation report. Those expectations have since cooled, leaving investors to reassess the likely path for U.S. monetary policy rather than trade around a settled outlook.
For crypto markets, the uncertainty matters because interest-rate expectations can influence appetite for assets viewed as more sensitive to changes in financial conditions. When traders adjust their assumptions about borrowing costs, the resulting repositioning can extend beyond equities and into bitcoin and other digital assets.
Crypto and equities face a common macro focus
Bitcoin’s decline and the Kospi’s steep fall do not establish that the two markets are moving for identical reasons. They do, however, show that investors were confronting a difficult backdrop at the same time: new inflation information had changed the perceived odds of a near-term Fed move, while those odds were already moving back in the opposite direction.
The shift also underscores why short-term market narratives can change rapidly around economic data. A rise in the probability of an October hike, followed by a cooling in those bets, creates an unsettled environment in which price action can reflect changing expectations as much as the underlying data itself.
For bitcoin traders, the immediate focus remains the interaction between inflation news, Federal Reserve expectations and broader risk sentiment. With the available market signal moving from a brief jump toward a 50% hike probability to a subsequent decline, the policy outlook remains a source of volatility rather than a clear directional guide.
